Our Polices

There was a long holiday last week since it was Songkran Festival. I did not go any where because this festival was a great opportunity that my family and other relatives would come and see each others again. According to this long hiliday, I was impressed by the police's project that help people on this long holidays. The thing that I really want to try when there was a long holiday like this would be the project which is about  taking care of houses of the police in the city. This project is very popular among those who live in the big city including Bangkok and provinces around Bangkok. People in the big city would find this opportunity to go back to their hometown and many of them take this chance to travel. At this point, a lot of robery and crime could be found a lot at this time of year. Here, the police comes up with the projects that people in the city can travel or leave their house safely by being guard or take care by the police in that area. I think that this project is very useful, creative and smart since this problem is one big problem that everyone know and is afraid of. In the past, many people solved this problem by not going out or someone in the family cannot join the trip that he/she has to stay at home in order to watch for the house. Another project that Thai police focus on is called "Drink NOT Drive". Since many people travel during this time of year, some drivers are sleepy and get tired and, even worst, some of them are drunk, a lot of accidents occured. Here, there would be a lot of stop point where the police could check the alcohol level in blood of the drivers and it is a place where drivers can get some rest if they are tired or sleepy. The interesting thing about this project for me is that, in this stop point, there are free coffee available for the drivers! Some people might think it is usual but, for me, it is very impressing. I can see the consideration and care from all the police that want to help all the drivers to stay at the stop point comfortably and get to theie destination safely and happily. They are ot only have to work hard during the holidays but they also try to help and serve their people comfortably and safely. :)

I want to marry farang????

Getting married a foreigner seems being an ideal marry of many Thai women. There are many women who marry a foreigner are flaunting themselves by owning a big house, luxurious cars and frequently traveling aboard. Those are an ideal life of many Thai women dream of .As Thais are framed with a self-centered society, preoccupied with materialism resulting in Thai women are trying to find any shortcuts to have a better life which getting married “farang” is one of the first choices. Girl from E-san seem to attract most in the eyes of the foreigner. A dark complexion with a friendly smile make E-san girls are popular in the eyes of foreigners.

As, Thais believe in being grateful and respect to their parents. Any children who can comfort or support their parents when they are getting old are regarded as a grateful person. It becomes a fashion in many E-Sarn provinces to export their daughter to marry “farang.” This is the only way that the parents can get a fast financial support that could upgrade their life to become better.
However, does this belief is morally acceptable? Are they having a true happiness? In my opinion, I am appreciate in what many daughters devote themselves to requite parent’s favor but is it worth to risk? Money or materials are not always symbolized “true happiness” but many women consider “economic security” much more than true love. However, how many women are successful in this kind of marry. There are many stories are told about Thai women are deceived to marry and are in difficulties in aboard. Many of them are lured to work hard; some of them are not treated nicely. I know that this is a sensitive issue that there is no right or wrong. However, I think this belief is the way of thought that can gradually destroy the value of Thai woman in the eyes of foreigners.
If you still have more time in reading please take a look at this link http://weekendamerica.publicradio.org/display/web/2008/04/10/thai/. It is a story written by a son who is trying to understand his father but his basic assumption towards Thai women is rather worrying.
If this belief towards Thai women in the eyes of foreigners is true, who will be responsible for this?

Sex object

News about sexual harassment on women in Thailand have never been absented from pages of newspapers. Everyday at least one has to be shown on a News channel on TV and radio. There are two things I notice from hearing and talking about those news.
First, when a woman encounters with sexual harassment, people tend to feel pity for her, but… at the same time, they think that the woman herself is the cause of the incident. I have also heard a comment from someone I know when News reported that a woman was raped and killed on a footbridge in Bangkok. The person said, “I feel sorry for her, but she’s the one who’s wrong. She shouldn’t have gone out in the middle of the night.” I was surprised to hear that. The commenter noticed, so she added “because going out like that will lure bad men who see her to harm her. She is not careful enough”
One more thing that I notice is… our society set a lot of rules for Thai women on what to do or not to do to shelter themselves but there are almost nothing for men to prevent sexual aggressiveness toward women. It is said that women should dress properly. Women should not let men see parts of their body. Women should not walk alone in the middle of the night, women should be careful and many other “women-should-do”. Whenever women fail to follow the rules, even they have been severely hurt, they are blamed.
The comments I heard and the rules I learnt let me ask myself. Does it mean that men cannot control their sexual desire at all? ….Actually, I don’t think they can’t. I know men are mature enough. I think, the real cause of the problem is not because of men instinct or wrong behave women. It has something to do with the way people think about women.
In my point of view, the way that our society portrays women’s images is one main cause of the problem. Our society treats women as goods. People treat women as weak and inferior. The mass media also create the thought of women as sex objects (everyone is now framed by the media to think of women as sex objects. Even women themselves are not the exceptions.) All of these ideas affect on women’s security.
I think this idea of women as sex objects makes it convenience for some men who are bad enough to take the opportunity to sexually harm women. Very often that I hear them make some excuses by accusing that women use their appearance to lure them. They are likely to say that… as women appearance causes sexual desire, women are the ones to blame because they are not careful enough. I think what they say are so unfair.

Today since english became one of the most important language for people around the world, studying English is very important for every Thai students. Englihsh is not only importnat for Thai students, but also for parents, teachers or even Thai government. The trend of sending their children to study abroad where English is taught as a native language such as USA., or UK. became more more popular. Yes, who else can teach English as the native but the native ones. Students not only can learn how to use and perdorm their English but they also can learn the life skill such as how to take care of themselves when they are far away from their parents and also learn how to sovle their own problems. Although it seems that studying aboard would provide many advantages for both students and their parents, I think, it is not always that good as it should be. When the students have to be alone and far aways from their parents, they could feel lonely and it is, at the same time, hard to find someone to talk to. There might be a lot of friends, but still, friends could lead them to the wrong direction. For parents, It is hard to guide their children since they are far away from each others. Moreover, studying aboard would cost very expensive that not many people could efford it. When I comes to this point and realize that studying aboard could not be that good, I question myself about studying in Thailand in term of  the quality of the curriculum and the quality of the students after graduate. I have to accept that the curriculum of Thai school these days is very good that they can produce many great students who are very good at English, especially some students who graduate from international school or bilingual school. What about the cradibility??? People who graduate from oversea would gain more craditbility than those who study in Thailand. For me, this belief is quite old already. I do not think that people who graduate aboard would always be better than those who graduate in Thailand that, these days, there are a lot of native speakers who teach in Thailand so that Thai students could learn their English as if they are aboard. However, this is just my opinion. How about yours? :)
